Shapla: A Healthy School

Shapla has a Healthy School award.

We understand that learning how to look after our bodies and minds is one of the most important things we can do at primary school. We offer:

  • school meals that are healthy and nutritious - all children from Reception to Year 6 are entitled to a free school meal
  • a piece of fruit daily for pupils in EYFS and KS1 as well as water and milk
  • a curriculum that helps children to learn about the body, diet, fitness and keeping healthy
  • physical activities during play times and lunchtimes
  • weekly PE in which football, netball, cricket, rounders, hockey, dance and gymnastics are rotated on a termly basis
  • weekly swimming lessons for year 5 and 6 classes
  • a specialist sports coach who works with classes from Nursery to Year 6 on a rotation basis throughout the year
  • participation in sports tournaments during the year
  • dental screening for Early Years and Key Stage 1
  • a school nurse who monitors individual children that have health concerns and offers support to families
  • health checks for Year 6 children
  • puberty sessions for Yr 5 children led by the School Nurse
  • healthy workshops for parents
  • health promotion meetings for parents led by NHS staff

If you have any concerns about your child's health, please speak to the class teacher, Carol (Inclusion Co-ordinator) or Anna (Deputy headteacher) who will discuss this with you.
